PoD: High Flying

I've had a busy few days considering the lack of high school games.
I spent yesterday and today setting up my parents HD tv and the stereo system that came with it.
I'm busy working on a bunch of photo's and projects that the past month has slowed me on.
I'm also getting ready for tomorrow's State semi-final game with a possible State final on Saturday in high school girls soccer. I also have the Syracuse final home game on Saturday for football.
So here's a photo from the Bonnies game against the Red Storm held in Rochester the other day.
PoD: Geneseo's New Fire Truck
Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 10:35AM
Last night Geneseo brought their new truck over to the village hall for the board meeting. The truck arrived when there was still day light but my report decided to wait until dark to tell me cause he thought the lights would look cool.
Well it would if I had a bunch of strobe's to properly light the truck but since I don't I had to improvise. I took my normal shots standing still with my flash on my ttl cord. The images where ok but I ran into the problem of the lights not showing up right or overpowering the shot which happens with fire trucks at night.
So then I got creative. I took my fish-eye and my off camera flash. Then I slowed my shutter speed down and set my flash to a rear-sync. Finally I twisted the camera as I took the shot.
The result is seen above. I have a better shot but that's running in the paper this week. The flash freezes the subject and the twisting along with the slow shutter gives that swirl look.

I really played around with the crop on this one. I had cropped it really tight and than rather wide. In the end this is how it looked best in my mind.
Its one of the things that I have been working on more since I started with Southcreek Global as apposed to what and how I crop an image for the Livingston County News.
See Southcreek likes tight crops but images left in the 8x12 range which is close to a full frame image while the LCN editor likes a more square image but has no real preference on the crop.
The 8x12 is nice cause it really lets me try some different types of crops and I think it has helped me create a style to my images that is different from what I think is the norm amongst a lot of the photographers I have seen.
PoD: Tuesday Night Football....Take II

My final UB football game of the 2009 season was last night....I have one more Syracuse game next week.
Its been a fun fall covering some NCAA football. I'm going to miss it as I move inside to the hard wood with a mix of ice thrown in there.
Southcreek has been great so far. The company has grown in a short time. They recently added SI and ESPN the Magazine as clients that have a direct link to our work.
So hopefully I can still produce some cool stuff and get some images in those two mags on a regular basis.
I also hope to do some more fun portraits to help show what I can do.
Its an exciting time for me even if its just at the beginning stages.
The sky is the limit....which means my wish list is growing as I look at cameras, lens and other stuff to add to my bag in the future and the games and events I'll be covering that I haven't even thought of yet.

Sorry I've been behind. Its been a busy few weeks on top of the fact that the Yankees played and won the World Series.
So its been a fun time around here.
I have 1 UB game left along with 1 Syracuse football before diving into Syracuse Basketball this year.
Things are really picking up and going well.
